The Poe Museum was honestly such a great experience and way more interesting than I expected going in. What really stood out to me was the history behind it. The museum does a great job showing how he grew up l, his connection to the city, and how it shaped him into the writer we know today. The buildings themselves add a lot to the experience too. Walking through them makes everything feel more real like you’re stepping back into Poe’s time. You get to see artifacts, letters, and personal items that give you a deeper look into his life, not just the dark, mysterious image people usually associate with him. One of my favorite parts was still the cats. It sounds small, but it added so much character to the place. They fit the vibe perfectly and made the whole visit feel a little more relaxed and memorable. Overall, it’s a really unique spot that mixes history, literature, and atmosphere in a way that just works. Definitely a unique visit if you’re in Richmond.

what an amazing spot! informative, engaging, iconic. some truly incredible artifacts on display here. the exhibit descriptions and signage throughout were written with a definite dark sense of humor as well. it's an interesting experience getting to walk through the different little houses, breaking up the periods of poe's life (and death) quite fittingly. there's so much information told by various sources from poe's youth about the things that influenced his writing. the courtyard with the bust of poe is such a serene, beautiful space. it was luckily somehow completely empty both time i was in it, lending some privacy to contemplate and take everything i had just seen in. empty except for a couple of adorable black cats who crossed my path. my cat passed away earlier this year and it was very touching getting to pet a cat by poe's bust after having read how poe's own cat died the very same day he did <3 my little goth heart was so happy in the gift shop, right down to the great playlist. a reasonable entry fee for how much they have on display and their stewardship of this history.
I took a class there for a field trip and they were not only accommodating, but did a great job with the tour. It's not easy to get 7th graders excited about a nineteenth century author, but I had so many students wanting to learn more about Poe. They were intrigued with his life, so thank you for sparking that curiosity in my students.
Don’t miss this museum if you are a Poe or literature fan! It is filled with artifacts from Poe’s world and more information about him than I knew. It’s easy to see where his macabre styles came from once you hear his story. This old house is not Poe’s in any way but is the oldest house in Richmond and interesting in itself. The gift store is so well curated! I spent forever just looking at the options. There are also some cute rescue cats around that like a scratch. Finally, the staff is great! Nevermore will you wonder if you love Edgar Allen Poe.
If you love Edgar Allan Poe this is a must stop! The Old Stone House, the display of Poe's belongings and writings, the English Garden with the Poe Shrine was beautiful! Of course, my favorite was the Poe Cats that were there - Edgar and Tib.
What an incredible historic home and story of an American poet, and author! We were fascinated and learned a lot about the incredible life of Edger Allan Poe! The staff there were very friendly and informational. We really enjoyed our time.
One of my favorite museums yet. 📚 WOW. Really enjoyed the tour and I am very familiar with Poe but I learned a lot I hadn’t heard before! 💀 The Poe Museum provides spooky vibes 👻 and I loved that the staff had some ghost experiences in the museum! Much bigger than expected! The whole tour and exhibition took us about a little over an hour. The garden area with the fountain was very serene and lots of kitties! 🐈⬛ Quality gift shop. Poe writings. ✍️ Bookmarks. 🔖 Pins.
Wonderful museum! Three buildings, each with a good collection of items from Poe’s life with thoroughly informative reading signs. The audio tour adds a great deal more information, as well. Taught me a lot about the author’s life and works that I was totally unaware of.
