We always have a wonderful time here. Make sure to buy the medallions—they’re only about two or three dollars each. They’re perfect for jewelry, necklaces, bracelets, or even keychains. We bought several to give to family and friends. They also offer religious coins. Don’t forget to purchase the holy water and the holy oil from St. Peregrine. The entire place is so solemn and peaceful—perfect for reflection. They also have the Stations of the Cross. We didn’t go up to the upper levels because you need to buy tickets for that, but the Grotto of the Sorrowful Mother is on the ground level, and that experience alone was enough for us. It reminded us of the Lady of Lourdes. This 102‑year‑old sanctuary is truly a must‑visit when you’re exploring Oregon. We traveled from the Seattle area, and the three‑hour drive made for meaningful family reflection. Every December, they host a Light Show/Festival of Lights, and the whole place is beautifully decorated. The church inside is stunning. Be sure to stop by the visitor center next to the church—it’s like a small museum filled with the site’s history. You can even write and drop your petitions there. A truly unforgettable place to visit.

Fantastic place to come and enjoy some scenery! If you have religious family members, they have statues and monuments for all beliefs. It’s a fantastic beautiful walk, the extra fee is worth it for those looking to take someone on a first date who has not visited or someone trying to put in the effort. Definitely worth it. They have mass on various days for those who want to visit and enjoy. Well taken care of are and worth the visit for those in Oregon for the first time!
This place is beautiful. There is a public part that is free and there is a section of the park that you have to pay to access. Often times there is a wedding taking place inside the church when visiting. It is very peaceful here. The parking lot is extremely small, almost impossible to find parking. I saw a lot of people park across the intersection and walk here.
We came to connect with each other spiritually for our 10 year wedding anniversary and celebrate my wife’s medical miracle and remission. We received peace and connection from humanity to nature. Plenty of areas to sit and reflect or breathe and clear the mind. The views are priceless and the traffic of people is light. The most gathered where those in the chapel of Mary for mass. It took us around 6 hours to visit the Gift shop, Plaza Level, upper garden and a mass at the Chapel.
The Grotto is a truly special place, especially during the holiday season. The setting is beautiful, with lights everywhere and countless photo opportunities that make it feel almost magical. The church itself has excellent acoustics, which adds a lot to the overall experience, particularly during services. If you’re planning to attend a holiday service, get there early because it fills up quickly. Well worth the visit and a great seasonal tradition.
Well maintained property. Very friendly staff. Nice places to sit, pray and reflect. You can buy a candle and they give you a match. You can leave behind at The grotto. We did the whole thing in about an hour and a half. The elevator to the top is pretty cool.
The Grotto in Portland was absolutely stunning. The church and grounds are beautifully maintained and so peaceful. There was something incredibly calming and spiritual about the entire experience, and I truly felt such a strong connection with Jesus while walking through the sanctuary and gardens. It’s a place that makes you slow down and reflect. Easily one of the most beautiful and meaningful places we visited in Portland — an absolute must visit.
This place is absolutely amazing. We didn't know what to expect and all we can say is, Wow! It doesn't matter if you are spiritual or not it is well worth the stop. Loved that the interpretative Center had a video on the making of the place. The Cave and church are on one level and then you take an elevator up to the top of the cliff for the rest. There are so many beautiful panels and statues all in a very well maintained garden, thanks to their volunteers.
