What a beautiful place. The grounds are well kept, the docents were kind and knowledgeable, and the chapel was a special experience. I didn’t know anything about Mark Rothko prior to visiting and it was still a wonderful experience. Wouldn’t recommend taking children unless then can manage a quiet meditative space for an extended period as to get the most from the chapel you’ll want to take your time.

The Rothko chapel is one of the most striking expressions of the abstract expressionist art movement. The inside is meditative and dominated by dark works created by the namesake artists. No photos are allowed inside. Across from the entrance is Barnett Newman's obelisk sculpture in a reflecting pond. The chapel is next to the Menil museum. Entry is free and there is free street parking nearby.

Beautiful chapel that has turned into an art exhibit. No photos allowed inside. Exhibit had large paintings on the wall and is a place for peace and reflection. Highly recommend.

"Place to go for getting many inspirations!" I visited Rothko Chapel, the world's only place dedicated exclusively to his works. Once I entered the chapel, his big pictures, mostly dark, surrounded me and took me into a world of meditation. His abstract works envoke me many inspirations continuously. It's a sublime experience I can't get anywhere else. I stayed here for one hour due to my schedule, but I wished I could stay all day long! It's also amazing this building was recovered after the hurricane damage in 2024. No money nor no religion required.

A special and sacred space tucked away in the heart of Houston. I didn’t know what to expect when I visited but I was pleasantly surprised as I walked into the chapel. Where else can you find a no-phone zone anywhere nowadays?? It was peaceful and time flew by as I sat in silence in the space and did some reflection and meditation. I noticed out of the corner of my eye a few people come in to pray and leave, as though they were regulars. Really cool to catch a glimpse of the vision behind this center that brings so many faiths together. On a side note, there’s construction happening in the garden/park area and the welcome center across the street. I also think the pool/pond was looking a bit murky and couldn’t get a good look at the reflection which is an aspect of the exhibit.

Unique place in Houston to visit. The Rothko Chapel is an interfaith chapel that encompasses accepting of all faith backgrounds. Inside you’ll see gray walls with black frames and in the center wooden benches with a ceiling that’s open. The entrance is free, but they do ask you don’t take photography or videos to respect the owner’s reservations. You can park in the front of the building area or on the nearby park.

What an experience! It's really something to behold. I loved every second of it, I understand it's not for everyone, but if you enjoy abstract art, you will LOVE it. The broken obelisk outside is a beautiful way to welcome you to the mood change for serenity and calm . When you enter the chapel, it will be dark and quiet, and then you enter a room with a huge painting of Rothko's work powerfull work, it's not easy nor comfortable art, it's dark, confining and agonizing feeling when you see them, I can't describe it... they have seats you can set and observe.
