I came here to escape the hustle and bustle of being surrounded by supertall skyscrapers for a couple of hours. I enjoyed immersing myself and how people lived back then. The guide in the tavern was knowledgeable about how voting and taverns worked back then, and it was fascinating to find out.

It's so worth paying the entry fee to get a guided tour. Our guide Joe was brilliant at providing an insight into the town's history and it's inhabitants. Even able to answer niche questions like what the homes were insulated with! Beautifully preserved, and lovely and quiet. Easy to get to with cheap public transport as well

Beautiful small historic village, but not the huge one. Full of nature around, there was small museum but not much artifacts. I suggest better to visit on any occasion day to enjoy it with full spirit.

I took my 2 kids here on Thursday for the free admission, 2-4PM. Type many of the houses were not available to tour on this day but enough to keep us busy for the 2 hours. Everyone here was super kind and informative. We saw how brooms and tin items were made, cooking in a fireplace, the general store, and played some tavern games. They also had an Italian ice truck and a café on site. We will definitely be back!

We came for a tour on Sunday and absolutely loved it. The historic buildings in the snow were beautiful. We arrived a little late but were very fortunate to be met by our patient tour guide Chris, who was an amazing tour guide - very knowledgeable, kind and clearly passionate about preserving and continuing the history and practices of the area. Would highly recommend the tour as you learn so much from your guide; and you get to see inside the buildings and appreciate the historic crafts and ways of life. We really liked the sense that people were putting a lot of effort into conserving traditional ways of making things, such as tin work, with the old workshops and kitchens still in use on certain days. Thank you Chris for the tour, it was a real highlight from our trip to New York. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a detailed insight into an earlier time, it’s a great counterpoint to modern life in New York City!

The town and museum are beautifully preserved, offering a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the area's historical settlers. We truly enjoyed exploring the museum and admiring the houses, each thoughtfully designed with a charming historical touch. However, one aspect that could be improved was the lack of a receipt or ticket after purchasing admission. The shop attendant merely instructed us to explore the museum freely, which felt somewhat disorganized. Despite this minor drawback, I wholeheartedly recommend visiting this place if you’re passing through or staying near Avenel, NJ.

Been here many times, great historical town with large parking lot & free to enter (unless something big is going on). Main Street Coffee shop is great to visit, bathrooms next to it, as well as several good forest trails nearby. Also see Church of St. Andrew. Btw check their website for events calendar, cool tours & fairs happen throughout the year.

I’ve visited attractions in over a dozen states, and this might be the first time I’ve ever felt compelled to write a review. The $10 admission grants access to several buildings with interactive guided tours. Each building has been perfectly preserved to reflect its appearance from one or two centuries ago. The guides have also created carefully designed interactive activities for each location. The entire tour takes about 90 minutes, and I think it’s absolutely worth it! It feels like I'm a resident back in those days!
