USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial

Awesome free museum. We were short on time and only spent about 30 minutes there. We should have scheduled about 90 minutes at least. So much to look at. The host was very nice and I felt bad we couldn't spend more time there.

Absolutely loved the USS South Dakota Battleship Memorial. The artifact both inside and outside the museum were phenomenal and, at times, quite sad. I highly recommend a visit here. Plan on spending a couple of hours here.

Wonderfully done museum with great staff and exhibits. Highly recommend for military, history lovers, kids, and curious minds. Good layout and the grounds are set up in a way to see the outline and features of the ship. Great experience and worth the stop in on a road trip!

What a wonderful and novel way to pay tribute to the battleship named after this state. Many components of the actual battleship were shipped to Sioux Falls after decommissioning. As a student of public history, this is an effective way of showing to the public authentic WWII artifacts. From Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima to Tokyo Bay, this ship saw major events in the Pacific theater. How fortunate for South Dakota to have her namesake proudly displayed in such a memorable and educational fashion.

It was an interesting stop if you happen to be in the area, as there is quite a bit of history to look through. Walking around the grounds gave me a good sense of the scale of things, but I felt like the experience was a little bit limited in terms of what you can actually see and explore. It is definitely worth a quick visit if you are into military history, but it didn't take me very long to see everything there was to see.

It was really nice to finally be able to visit the USS South Dakota Memorial. It's a shame that the ship itself could not have been saved. But I guess the memorial with portions of the ship and artifacts is the next best thing. I love the way they laid things out like they were still on the ship. It was nice walking around and seeing those portions. Some of them are probably the best choices as transporting a lot of those parts had to be very difficult. The inside section of the museum was very well done. They do have a small gift shop section. I wish I would have had more time to read, look closer and reflect on this ship and the men who served on her. It's a great place to visit and hopefully learn. I recommend visiting if you have the opportunity.

The USS South Dakota battleship is definitely a must see for tourists coming to Sioux Falls. They have parts of the battleship laid out on the property as if it was sitting there in real life. They also have a free museum that has many great old photos, artifacts, and lots of historical information about the battleship and it's journey.

The exhibit is fantastic; it's grown a lot since my first visit back in 2010. Chris Tucker gave an excellent tour with some cool behind-the-scenes facts. Definitely make it a stop when passing through the area, and tell Chris that Karl I said hello!
