This was my first time ever at this particular art museum, and goodness, didn't make a great first impression!! My husband wanted to come check out the KAWS Exhibit, and I thought he knew more about him, but apparently he knew his artwork from Asia and didn't know he was from New York. Lol it was very inspirational and we had no idea we could explore the other floors of the our gallery once we got the tickets! Even though we've had a 2:30 PM showing for the KAWS exhibit, we ended up staying until 430 to check out the other floors! Perfectly to spend a Sunday afternoon!! There docents or art gallery carriers at each section in case you had questions, although I think they were there to make sure no one took anything. They also had their own separate specialty gift shop for the seasonal exhibit as well as a giant gift shop for the whole museum itself! We walked through both sections and the downstairs gift shop was amazing! It reminds me of that old store, learning express. Along with a lot of San Francisco Schottky apparel it was very interesting to see all the different artists and projects you could buy as well as different paraphernalia. The gift shop seemed normal prices for San Francisco. And there was somebody there to answer questions, if need be.

An outstanding destination for modern and contemporary art lovers. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) is truly world-class. The architecture alone is impressive, but what’s inside is even better—an incredible collection of modern and contemporary works that are both inspiring and thought-provoking. The galleries are spacious, beautifully curated, and easy to navigate, allowing you to fully enjoy each exhibit at your own pace. From iconic masterpieces to innovative installations, there’s something that captures your attention in every room. The museum also offers a calm and sophisticated atmosphere, perfect for spending a few hours immersed in art. Highly recommended for anyone visiting San Francisco—an enriching and unforgettable cultural experience.
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is one of the best museums in San Francisco, and a must-visit for anyone with even a passing interest in modern and contemporary art. We have visited twice, and both experiences exceeded our expectations. The museum feels modern from the moment you step inside. The architecture and layout feel intentional and thoughtfully designed, creating a space that is both visually striking and easy to navigate. The collection is varied, and the galleries are arranged in a way that rarely feels overcrowded. This was particularly impressive given that we visited on a Saturday during the summer holiday season, while a special exhibition was also running. The works on display range from familiar names such as Warhol and Lichtenstein to pieces that are provocative, bizarre, and unapologetically avant-garde. Most recently, we attended the *Matisse’s Femme au chapeau: A Modern Scandal* exhibition, and it was one of the strongest special exhibitions we have seen in San Francisco. My partner and I have visited a number of special exhibitions throughout the city, and while many have been excellent, few have demonstrated the same level of attention to detail. The curators meticulously recreated the original salon gallery where the works debuted, adding valuable historical context and helping visitors better appreciate the controversy and significance surrounding the painting. The museum café offers a pleasant place to take a break between galleries. The outdoor courtyard is tastefully accented with sculptures and provides impressive views of the surrounding city. The food was surprisingly good, and while the prices were average for the area, they felt reasonable by museum standards. The tart was particularly memorable: fresh, light, and flavorful. It is more of a snack than a meal, but it makes for a nice accompaniment to a coffee and conversation. For budget-conscious visitors, the meal pictured below cost around $15, which felt quite reasonable for a museum café in San Francisco. To make the most of your visit, purchase your tickets online in advance. They can be added directly to your phone’s wallet, allowing you to bypass the ticket line. If you plan to attend a special exhibition, arrive close to your scheduled entry time, as visitors are generally not admitted early. Afterward, consider spending some time in the Yerba Buena Gardens across the street. It is a peaceful place to relax, reflect on the exhibits, and bring a wonderful day to a close.
first thing you gotta do is drop your bag off. i noticed comfortable looking chairs at the ground level. there's also two gift shops one main one and then one in the KAWS exhibit. we took the stairs up to the ticketing area. the price is very reasonable. this exhibit is very beautiful. i caught this exhibit just in time. it's so cool reading the little inspiration and history behind the art being made. KAWS has always been cool art and cool collectibles. very beautiful exhibit and you can really take the time to look at it all. bought a pink KAWS shirt here, i don't really care about the size. i did end up staining the shirt when i came back home to wash it. must've been transfer dye from my blue jeans or other clothes. managed to end up getting it out. anyway. this exhibit was very beautiful and hope people can enjoy it before it's over. appreciate the kind lady who said i don't look like an adult. would so go to SFMOMA again.
Incredible modern and contemporary art collection in a sleek beautiful building. Went with a baby and stroller and it was easy to navigate. The Matisse show was great but gets very crowded. FYI If you bring a backpack you’ll have to wear it on your front
SFMOMA is a must-visit for any art lover! The space is bright, modern, and perfectly laid out. Whether you’re into iconic pieces by masters like Frida Kahlo and Andy Warhol or exploring their incredible rotating contemporary exhibits, there’s always something inspiring to discover. Pro-tip: Don't miss the living wall, the largest of its kind in the US, and take your time on the outdoor sculpture terrace for some great city views!
A very large museum space, with lots of beautiful architecture. Much smaller collection than would be expected. If you're from out of town, I'd recommend timing your visit based on the current rotating exhibits. If you go while they're in between exhibits, much of the museum is off limits/empty. Otherwise a great museum for the price (15$ per person)
Good museum, with fairly impressive collection, particularly of more contemporary art (earlier modern art feels a little more limited versus other global galleries). Cool building design, very open and spacious. Make sure to check the very colourful toilets!
