We had a really great experience buying from Santa Margarita Ford. After being told to come back after we get more money from the finance manager from another Ford dealer, and a second dealership left me to help someone else after leaving me to get the keys for a Mach-e I wanted to see. Santa Margarita Ford reached out to me unsolicited to buy my Ford Expedition. They verbally committed to beating my CarMax offer. They didn't — and what happened next tells you everything you need to know about how this place operates. When I brought the car in, their appraisal came in below CarMax. I showed them the offer. They told me they were a CarMax partner and asked to see the referral number so they could "get their number up." I handed it over. They went into another room. When they came back, their offer hadn't moved — and my CarMax offer had dropped. They used the code I provided to connect the transaction on the back end and suppressed the competing offer I walked in with. This wasn't a miscommunication. This was a play. And it only worked because I trusted them. Here's the thing about a move like this: it doesn't happen by accident. It takes process knowledge, system access, and a decision to use both against a customer who came in good faith. That's not a mistake — that's a method. And if this is how they handle a low-stakes transaction they initiated, you already know how they handle one where you need something from them. Do not share outside offer details or referral codes with this dealership before you have their number in writing. Better yet — find a dealership that doesn't need to be warned about. I won't be back. Update: After posting this review, I contacted CarMax directly. They confirmed that sharing my offer code the way this dealership requested is not the intended use of the partner program. I'll let that speak for itself.

Our first Ford vehicle was a 1999 Expedition, purchased in North Orange County, but served exclusively by Santa Margarita Ford. They always went out other way to treat us as valued guests and we were always satisfied by the service provided. We purchased a 2023 Maverick hybrid, and have received the same exceptional service, never having to deal with upsells. Should we ever need to purchase another vehicle? We would seriously consider the explorer hybrid and would only purchase one from SM Ford. Thanks to the entire team for consistently exceptional service.
