North Carolina Museum of Art

Always a pleasure going to experience the arts and nature! The park is one of my favorite places to go walking, and there are frequently dance performances by great artists like FLEE (Frankie Lee) Dance Co. and the Panoramic Dance Company (NC State). Moses T. Alexander creates amazing experiences fusing the arts and making them available to the general public.

Free & educational 🤑🤑 Take the kids outside on the trail for the art exhibit it’s amazing and it’s a great way for kids to burn energy while learning. It does look like they’re still building behind the museum, maybe an amphitheater? I’m super excited for the new additions either way. Definitely going back again before the summer ends.

I had a wonderful visit to the North Carolina Museum of Art. The museum has a great variety of artwork, with an impressive mix of both classic and modern pieces to explore indoors. What really makes this place special is the outdoor museum park. There are beautiful trails, sculptures to discover, and plenty of benches and open spaces where you can sit and relax. It’s a perfect place for a walk after spending time inside the galleries, and it would also be a great spot to bring a picnic and enjoy the surroundings. This is a great place for a date day — you can explore the museum together, walk the trails, see the outdoor sculptures, and even have a picnic. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Such a great place to visit if you are in the area! Admission is free and they have beautiful walking trails. We visited on a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty busy but not overwhelming. Great place to explore or have a picnic. Dogs are allowed on the walking trails. The museums are also beautiful and worth the visit!

The North Carolina Museum of Art is an absolute masterclass in curation. For anyone who frequents the global art circuit, this institution stands out as an unexpected jewel in the American South, easily rivaling major metropolitan collections.While the museum covers an expansive timeline, the real magic lies in slowing down for a select few exhibits. The dialogue between classical European masterworks and the sun-drenched contemporary wings is brilliant. The Judaic art gallery is particularly arresting, offering a rare look at ceremonial culture, while the powerful collection of African diaspora art forces a visceral rethinking of form and space. Outside, the 164-acre park turns monumental sculptures into a living canvas shifting with the Southern light. If you are ever in North Carolina, this is a non-negotiable stop. It satisfies the most discerning aesthetic palate. Don't just look at the art here; let it consume you.

This place is a great place for Instagram photos. Be sure to get a map and tour the entire grounds, which is very expensive! For outside pictures, it's best when the sun is not so intense, but cloudy days are good for photos too. 😀 Take the time to read the plaques and appreciate the artists for their work. The time I visited, Staff were super nice inside both buildings. You will enjoy 100%!

I came down to visit from Richmond VA, and this museum rivals the VMFA. It has fewer pieces overall but a more open feel to it, giving space to ponder and meander. They currently have a special exhibit about the American West that highlights Native voices and colonialism. There's also a Kehinde Wiley piece that I hadn't seen before! The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. If you buy a postcard, you can even have the museum mail it for you, which is a nice touch. Also, very important but easily missed detail: there are a few chairs for the security associates to sit on and rest in between patrolling the galleries.

I wish I could give this place SO MANY STARS. They have motorized scooters!!!! I don’t know any museum that does, and the freedom it gave me as I visited and injured my shins and couldn’t walk much, was something I will forever be grateful for. Many museums have wheelchairs you can borrow, which is super awesome. But it’s hard to propel yourself far in a wheelchair (esp if you’re not use to it or have other disabling conditions). The truest way to accessibility is motorized transportation, and they have it! Not only that, the collections are extensive, spanning ancient history, global art, and local art! Their cafe is affordable, accessible, and has a lot of unique offerings and my favorite brand of tea: republic of tea. Also: maybe half a dozen accessible spots just outside the museum entrance!
