Carnegie Museum of Natural History

Visiting the Carnegie Museum of Art near Carnegie Mellon University** was an amazing experience. The museum features a beautiful collection of both classic and contemporary works, all thoughtfully displayed in a calm and inspiring environment. Being able to access the Carnegie Museum of Natural History as well makes the visit even more worthwhile. It’s definitely a must-see destination if you’re in Pittsburgh.

One of the top Museums in the country. Dinosaurs everywhere. Probably one of the best Dinosaur Bones collection in the World. I’ve been coming here for over 60 years some of the Dioramas have been here that long. One of the hidden gems of this Museum is the Native peoples Wing it’s worth seeking out. Usually no one in there but so much to see. Parking is easy it’s at the bottom of Craig St. The Art Museum has some fantastic Displays of Old Masters and newer Contemporary Artists Other Gems in this area. Soldiers and Sailors Hall The Cathedral of Learning.

What a remarkable museum. So much to explore - from dinosaurs to architecture and much more. The food court was great too with good prices. Great for ALL ages! Parking is $10 for 3 hours. Well worth the visit! The dinosaur exhibit shocked me how extravagant it was!

A superb and massive display of dinosaur skeletons and fossils (see pics). The gem and rock gallery was amazing and somewhat overwhelming. Great museum for any age.

The Carnegie Museum of Natural History is outstanding, and it easily deserves two full days (at least) to truly take it all in. The dinosaur fossils alone are jaw-dropping, and the bird and insect displays are incredibly detailed and fascinating. Add in the artwork and the way the museum weaves together natural and human history, and it becomes an immersive experience from start to finish. Everything is impressively organized, informative, and genuinely engaging. An incredibly interesting and well-curated museum.

Come for the dinosaurs, stay for the rest. A very large, nicely collated collection. Complete with dinosaur fossils, pottery, taxidermy birds, taxidermy dioramas (so vintage), and even though it wasn’t there when we visited… Egyptian relics! I was really sad to see that the Egyptian hall was closed during our visit. But! It looks like there may be some changes. Also, one of the long-standing indigenous rooms is closing as of 2026.

We went on a Saturday with our 1.5 year old and had a lot of fun. There is a paid parking lot directly behind the building, but there is not great signage to know it's there and Google maps doesn't seem to know there is a lot there. There's a big patio like area in the back with steps up to a glass hallway, where it appears there used to be entry doors which seem to have been removed for soon reason. The official entrance goes through an indoor construction area with low hanging beams that if you are very tall you might have to actually duck under. There is a policy that you can't wear backpacks, which for anyone with a toddler they'll know this is highly annoying, and they will badger you if at any point you don't carry it in front of you or use a stroller to carry it. They do provide strollers, but that said there's many stairs that are more convenient than the elevator placement you would need if you want a stroller and we had no need for a stroller other than carrying the bags, so we took one and abandoned it about twenty minutes later, then were badgered about the bag later when we put it on our back for a second to get a rest. I guess they don't want people getting bumped by bags, but this is a silly over reaction, I'm not sure if someone once wore camping gear and was knocking over children and the elderly, but the policy is silly and inconvenient, inconsiderate even. They do not provide wrist bands and instead provide a little string that is about wrist sized with a hanging paper ticket. I get they don't want people not paying and walking around for free, but when I put it in my pocket I was badgered by a security guard that it must be visible at all times, so the only way I could do that was to put it on my wrist, which was annoying and during our stay it ended up ripping off the strong anyway and I lost it. They should either provide actual wrist bands or lanyards if they are going to have a policy that it must always be on display. Additionally with the construction going on we went down the hall and didn't realize that to get to the natural History side of the museum you have to go through the store. In retrospect, of course you do, and there was a sign, bit I will say the sign was not obvious and there was no sign not to go down the ramp/steps another football field in length as the sculpture room and further passage is all blocked off... Better signage would have been appreciated. They did also have the Egyptian area and the small doors on the bridge closed, which not a big deal, but not all of the museum was open for the full price ticket and I didn't see posted anywhere when purchasing the ticket and summary of what address were open and closed, which I think is information they should be obligated to provide up front. I wind also note, the floors and steps in maybe after are a beautiful polished stone, however if you have a toddler that likes to lick their shoes off and run around in socks or if you have shoes that might slip on such a material you should consider that when selecting your shoes for the day. Other than those mainly minor annoyances and gripes everything was actually very good. The dinosaur skeletons were plentiful and there were touch screen displays with my information about the exhibits. There were helpful staff all around and they were more than willing to take pictures or tell you information about the exhibits. This continued into all the different areas with realistic animals in realistic displays that were excellent. Our toddler can never find the animals we are pointing at when we go to the zoo, but here they get to see everything up close and can readily argue with you that every bear is in fact a dog and be mildly frightened of the giant buffalo, which made it obvious that a toddler can really take in the animals and experience in a way that is arguably better than the zoo itself for that age. Excellent experience wear some comfortable shoes dress light. Lots of walking and they do have an elevator for ones in wheelchairs or strollers. Once you park in the garage the museum is on level 6 the elevator is a long wait but worth it. You can not leave the parking garage with cash they only take credit cards. Minimum is $10.00. Went today Saturday collage kids everywhere. Enjoy
