Oakland Museum of California

Our group from the NAACP Merced County Branch recently visited the Oakland Museum of California, and the experience was outstanding from start to finish. We traveled in through the Amtrak Gold Runner partnership from Merced, and the museum staff were welcoming and accommodating to our intergenerational group, from elementary age students to seasoned community leaders. The exhibits were thoughtfully curated, engaging, and deeply reflective of California’s diverse history and cultural contributions. The storytelling throughout the galleries was powerful, interactive, and relevant. We especially appreciated how the museum creates space for meaningful conversations around culture, identity, and community. It was not just a visit. It was an experience that sparked dialogue and connection long after we left. One suggestion for improvement would be a more streamlined check in process for larger pre registered groups. An expedited line for partner programs would make arrival smoother. Overall, an exceptional experience. We will absolutely be back, and we are already talking about the next trip.

Great exhibits on 1/2/26...we really enjoyed the Oakland Museum of California. It was much more expansive and engaging than we expected and very well organized overall. Some sections are fuller than others, but nothing felt confusing or disjointed. 🏛️ Layout & Exhibits The museum is divided into three main sections on three different levels: (1) California & Oakland history, (2) Science, and (3) Art. The history exhibits were a highlight—walking through the decades made California and Oakland’s story feel much clearer and more connected. What stood out most is that everyone was genuinely engaged: the kids explored on their own (not just tagging along), and the adults were just as absorbed. It worked well for all of us at the same time. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Ages Good for all ages, but younger kids will enjoy the science section the most. The history and art sections felt best suited for older kids (8+), which matched our experience. Walking through the decades of California/Oakland history helped everything click in a clear, connected way—great for homeschoolers or families who value contextual learning. 🎒 Bags, Food & Lockers - No purses allowed, but jackets with pockets were fine - No food or water bottles allowed inside - Lockers available for belongings ♿ Accessibility There are many stairs, but also ramps and elevators connecting all levels of the three museum sections. Wheelchairs are available. Security is present at entrances and throughout. 🚗 Parking (Important Notes) There is an on-site parking garage, and you can pay inside or outside. Once you pay, you have about 15 minutes to exit. ⚠️ When the museum starts closing, everyone is pushed out at once, which caused a line to exit the garage—plan extra time. ⏰ Closing Time — Plan Ahead Although it says they close at 5:00 PM, they begin closing everything around 4:45 PM. Bathrooms close, doors lock, and visitors are directed out. We didn’t even make it to the gift shop because we didn’t realize how firm this was. ‼️If anyone in your group needs the bathroom, go earlier—otherwise expect a long wait or to miss it entirely. Overall: A really engaging, well-designed museum that works for meaningful family learning: kids and adults at the same time. Just plan your timing carefully near closing. Absolutely worth the visit.

If you grew up in the east bay and you came here on school field trips this is not the same museum. It has been beautifully reimagined and updated. The price of admission is well worth it. The museum seems never ending. You can spend the whole day here learning about California history, art, culture and natural history. We will be getting a membership so we can enjoy it all year. Also have lunch at the cafe. We got the burger and chicken sandwich and this is probably the best museum food we’ve had. Most places charge a ton for mediocre food. Not the OMCA!

Oakland Museum of California, Oakland I’ve been here many times especially when my daughter was small, now I come here with my nieces and nephews. The museum displays changes often, so there’s always something new to see. I usually love visiting the garden area especially on a beautiful sunny day! The garden area has been renovated so there’s many places to sit, relax and have a quick lunch when in the area. The museum has three floors, so there’s plenty to see, so make sure you wear comfortable shoes! 👟 The bottom floor is the Nature Area, most kids love that area, to see and explore all the wild animals that roams in California. The “Welcome to Oakland” sign and “Oak tree” display is located on this floor. Awesome exhibit! The second floor is where you pay for your admission, the gift shop is here, one of the main rooms changes to new event or exhibition. It’s also next to the entrance of Town Fare restaurant! Great food and great vibes! The other room is based on history of technology and revolutions. Old school car and television, the history of the Black Panther Party, the Chinese Excursion Act, Angel Island, Paper brother and paper sister, the history of the great San Francisco fire and earthquake, the history of technology and so on. There’s even a small theater room too. The top floor is mainly art and statues, many hidden rooms to explore. We came on a weekday so that’s usually field trip days for kids, it wasn’t crowded either so we still got to see plenty of stuff. I will always come back and visit! 💕

Big complex with many layers that make it easy to get lost. Enjoyed a few of the exhibits and the garden area. Plan on spending a couple hours here in order to see the whole place. There is a parking garage under ground that is convient to access the museum.

(Review for the kids place) Fun place to take your kids. It can get a bit busy, but plenty space/activities for the average day. For any special events, it gets a bit loud (even for kids). The museum exhibits around the kids place makes the experience fun while the kids are allowed to crawl around and 'interact' with the spaces. For families with kids, it may be hard to corral your kids and wait by any of the elevators. They are a bit old, so waiting for an elevator to move is a bit challenging. The outdoor space is nice for fresh air.

So much to see! The museum is separated in 3 sections, history, art, and science. There's sections explicitly for children engagement (fun for adults too!) Also free programing on Friday evening that included dance lessons and a free concert! The art exhibition showed a wide variety of art and artists. It also provided so much insight to the culture of the area, how it was shaped and what it impacted. I can't wait to visit again!

This place is comparable to the one in NYC! I did not expect. I have been living in the bay for over a decade and did not expect this on our backyard. Must see!
