Fantastic History. The museum exceeded my expectations. Very nicely done. Arrive by 10 to be sure you don't miss any of the presented talks. If you enjoy history, this is a must-see in Charleston. Follow up your tour with a trip to Magnolia Cemetary to the back where you will find the Hunley crews.

Visitor notes
It was AMAZING to see the moment on TV when the Huntley was raised… now you can see it here .. IN PERSON! Come see one of the coolest pieces of history ever recovered off the ocean floor!
My husband is a Navy veteran and was really excited to see this exhibit. It was very educational and informative. There was a lot of cool exhibits that shed some light on a critical part of our nation's history. I knocked a point off because the Hunley is suspended in a glass tank (for good reason) but you can only view it from the top down through highly reflective glass. It would have been better if we could have seen it from the ground level so you could actually see more of the boat. Otherwise it was a great exhibit. The staff was friendly and helpful and ready to answer any questions. Restrooms were clean and just shop was well-stocked, albeit a little on the pricey side. Plenty of free parking, easy on, easy out.
This museum was absolutely the coolest thing we did while in town. The history of this sub is amazing and the folks there are super knowledgeable and have so much love for the Hunley. I've been watching videos and checking out pictures online for about a decade and seeing it in person is so much better. Definitely check this out! Additionally, keep an eye out for some hidden plastic army men. I've kind of left them all over Charleston! If finding a plastic army man brightens up your day, my mission is complete!
I went with my Aunt who worked on the restoration after they recovered the Hunley. She agreed with me that the men who gave the presentations were really good at descriptions, time frame, etc..I found the museum to be on par with any of the larger well know museums. I felt very lucky to be able to see something so important to the history of our country.
A truly awesome, and educational experience! Very well done. We were able to sit in on a discussion and it was, truly, inspiring. The speaker was very knowledgeable, took his time, and answered all questions. I highly recommend this tour!
The museum is rather small, however it is packed with interesting and informative displays and artifacts. Especially the personal items found with the Captain on its fatal mission. The submarine itself is very well preserved and can be seen clearly in its display tank.
What an amazing tour! Thank you to John our fabulous tour guide! He was so filled with knowledge and all the kids and adults in our group had such a great time. Science mixed with history! We opted for a private weekday group tour and I highly recommend that if you can!
