I love that they do appointments! So no sitting around all day. The place is clean and the staff is nice. It can get a little expensive according to the style you want. I wasn't able to book with the top stylist because they were available the day I wanted, so I took who was available. Although she needed help to style my hair it came out the way I wanted it. I didn't see the owner of the shop name on the booking website so I don't know how to book her. But I did see her the day I was there doing one person hair. Overall its worth it especially if you like having like having an appointment and stylist is working on you and not 3 other people at the time (something I have experienced before).

Visitor notes
If I could no stars I would. I would not recommend Nappstar based on my experiences. Customer service is consistently poor, and appointments do not seem to be respected. On two separate occasions, I arrived on time for my scheduled appointment only to be told I would have to wait because someone else had been seated ahead of me. During my most recent visit, I was informed that I would need to wait an additional two hours despite having an appointment. The staff also came across as impersonal and rude. Rather than creating a welcoming environment, they openly talked about one another in front of clients, which felt unprofessional. I understand that unexpected delays can happen, but when it becomes a repeated pattern without regard for a customer’s time, it shows a lack of respect. Time is valuable, especially when clients are paying for a service. Unfortunately, after experiencing the same issue more than once, I won’t be returning.
Simone did my retwist yesterday and pulled it up into a simple ponytail (5/7/26). The number of people who have stopped me to ask who did my hair and where did I get it done...omg. Thank you Simone!
Do not ever waste your time and money going to NappStar. This was the most disrespectful treatment I have ever experienced at a hair salon and I am absolutely infuriated by how I was treated. For context, I actually really like my stylist, Belinda. I am extremely particular about my hair and who I trust with it, so I booked my appointment weeks in advance. I am also a very busy professional and business owner, meaning my time literally costs money. When I schedule hair appointments, I close my calendar and lose income for that day. On top of that, I live in Princeton, NJ, so getting to NYC means either driving or paying over $40 roundtrip on the train. Today, after I was already on the train for my appointment, only an hour and 5 minutes before my appointment, the manager called to tell me that Belinda could no longer see me because a “VIP client” needed my appointment slot instead. Let that sink in. I explained that this was incredibly unprofessional because I am also a paying client. My money spends exactly the same as a VIP’s and I had booked my appointment weeks ahead of time. I was already traveling to NYC when they decided my appointment no longer mattered. I asked whether there would at least be some sort of discount or accommodation for the inconvenience. The manager said she “wasn’t sure” because she had to ask a different stylist even though they did not even know yet who that stylist would be. That response alone was baffling. Any compensation should have immediately come from ownership or management, not based on whether another stylist felt like offering something. The manager said she would call me back. I stressed that time was important because I was literally on the train approaching NYC and needed to know whether to get off and continue or turn around and go home. She did not call me back for almost an hour. By the time she finally left a voicemail, I was already pulling into Penn Station. Their “solution” was a complimentary hot oil treatment, which was a service I neither booked nor needed. Again, more inconvenience for me instead of accountability from them. When I finally got to the salon, the manager barely looked me in the face while refunding my deposit. Her attitude felt dismissive and flippant, with zero acknowledgment of the time, money, and effort they wasted. If this is NappStar’s normal business practice, bumping clients who booked weeks in advance for VIPs at the last minute, then please spend your money elsewhere. Black women already spend enormous amounts of money maintaining our hair, and salons like this continue to disrespect the very customers who keep them in business. As much as I liked my stylist, my time, money, and self respect cost too much to allow a business to treat me this way.
I really love the way my hair turns out when I get it done here. The stylists are the stars for real. The business process however is a disaster. The pricing is obscure and when I complained management hung up on me. The owner called me and was pleasant but offered no real solution. I don't have an issue with the cost. I do have an issue with unexpected costs and upcharges that are applied without giving me the option to decline. Each time I go I love my hair but there's some ridiculous part of their process that makes it less relaxing and more eyeroll. If they tighten up on entire customer experience and revisit their pricing with clarity it would go a long way and be less frustrating for all involved. But very talented stylists nonetheless.
Cons-I almost never get the person who I book, which it’s important because they use a certain type of skill that is customized to my needs and some of the other hair dressers do not apply. Surprise hidden fees, overbooking, same day cancellations, long wait times sometimes even with an appointment and if you want to modify something within reason, some stylists get upset, charging customers before the style is complete. All of these things can add resentment as a customer to the shop and make them want to switch shops. Saying they are going to leave you under the dryer for 30 minutes sometimes and it turns into 50 and you get no explanation and can’t find the stylist. Some stylists do not show up on time which is frustrating when the customer has things to do and their time and money is valuable. Extremely overpriced. Loc retwists should be no more than $100 but we are made to put down a deposit that we don’t get back and even if you come on a training day or a day when there are supposed to be discounts, you still wind up paying a lot of money. Pros- Nice decorations, aesthetic and vibe. Clean shop, bathrooms. Good music, nice vibe. Sometimes the owner comes out and starts trying to put out fires as far as things that have gone wrong but at the end of the day, they really need to turn this business around fast.
Professional salon, great staff, good vibes overall and well trained. It can get busy and sometimes there can be a little wait, but they get you going efficiently overall. Most of all you'll love the end result.
My experience: I got there 45min before my appointment I was greeted my a nice receptionist who looked up my online booking and told me to wait while she get me settled in. I added on a deep conditioning so I was sat at the washing station where I waited my turn. My wait time was around 15min before I was worked on. The deep conditioning was cool, no issues there. My stylist finished out my deep conditioning with a wash and she proceeded to count my locs. Once at her station she asked me what type of oil I would like to use and I let her choose. She began my locs —the first two rows and then she excused herself to finish up a previous client, that wait was about 20mins. A co-worker came by to help her with my hair and he did on row pretty quickly. And then she came back to me to finish up the work. I was there a total of 3hours and 30mins. I think that’s the typical time it takes to retwist hair. I think she did a decent job, I just wished my parts in the front were straight. If you switched stylist you’d know that this happens. Might be important to tell your stylist to start with your front if parting is important to you, otherwise your parts will be leaning. The people are nice otherwise but I’m an American so when foreigners speak amongst themselves in their language I can’t help but to think “what are they saying” not saying that’s unprofessional but maybe it can come off as rude to speak over people not knowing what they are saying. Overall would I go back? Yes. Maybe a different stylist. I was waiting long enough to see who I’d like to style my hair for my next appointment. (7/10 experience) Also… there was a 50$ deposit and I had the 85$ special with the 25$ deep conditioning which is 110$? I have a pending payment for both!? I will come back and say ID if was charged over the amount or not because it wasn’t supposed to be $150 Update: I was overcharged. I will be contacting them about it
