A True Journey Through Montana's History! If you find yourself in Missoula, do not miss the Historical Museum at Fort Missoula. I recently visited this 32-acre site, and I have to say, it’s far more than just a typical museum; it truly feels like stepping back in time. What amazed me the most: • Untold Stories: The Far From Home exhibit was incredibly moving. Learning about the Japanese and Italian detainees during WWII showed me a different side of American history that I hadn't known before. • The Bicycle Soldiers: The story of the 25th Infantry is fascinating! Imagine African-American soldiers (Buffalo Soldiers) in 1897 cycling 1,900 miles from right here to St. Louis just to test the bike's military utility. • Outdoor Exploration: Walking among the 20+ historic buildings—from the old one-room schoolhouse to the massive steam locomotive—gives you a real sense of what life was like in the 19th century. • Respecting Roots: The exhibits dedicated to the Salish and Kalispel tribes are thoughtfully curated, offering a deep respect for the original inhabitants of this land. My Advice: Wear comfortable walking shoes because the grounds are vast, and every corner is worth exploring. It’s a perfect spot for both history buffs and families looking for an educational yet fun day out.

This museum helped me learn about the history of military services, and how military in the past. The place can be a little bit hard to move around when it is raining since I visited when it was rainy a lot. Overall, the museum was very helpful to me and the staff was very nice too.

Good to explore I wish they would’ve had more information on the buffalo soldiers that were stationed there. It was very minimal, but it had a little bit on the wall history.

Only had one day in town so we had to pick just a couple things to visit and this was one of them. It’s an old army base that has been through many different scenarios over its history. It’s a three dollar entry fee for seniors there’s indoor but mainly outdoor exhibits. Pick up a brochure when you pay your fee and it’ll help you tour the outside areas.

I spent a wonderful afternoon walking around this expansive outdoor grounds and was totally captivated by how much local history is preserved here. The property features a fantastic collection of restored historical buildings, including an old schoolhouse, a vintage locomotive, and a deeply moving look into a wartime internment camp. Everything is clearly marked with informative signs that tell a compelling story, making it incredibly easy to learn about the area's heritage at your own pace. The surrounding mountain views are absolutely breathtaking, and the peaceful atmosphere makes it a perfect destination for families, history buffs, or anyone looking to enjoy a scenic walk while learning something new.

The Historical Museum at Fort Missoula was such a fascinating experience! There’s so much to see and learn — the history spread throughout the property is absolutely astounding. We loved exploring the outdoor exhibits and taking in all the stories behind the old machinery and buildings. Be prepared for lots of walking, but it’s well worth it. Definitely plan to spend a good amount of time here — and maybe count it as your steps for the day! A wonderful stop for history lovers and families alike.

We absolutely LOVED this place! Seeing all the old mining, logging, and farm equipment was a thrill for us. The museums (4) are very nice. I wish more of the older buildings were open to the public. Loved climbing up the lookout tower... great views! Wear comfortable shoes and enjoy!

A real gem and historical look over the last two hundred years of Missoula farm, fire, train, and many other varieties of farming equipment and more. The museum is very well designed and the information is engaging. The bicycling museum is another treasure of city’s history and lore. And the folks there are just as fine as apple pie!
