The moment I asked myself - what the heck a flying sofa is doing where chandelier are hanged - I realized it is pure contemporary art that blows up your mind. Even if you are not into enjoying the observation of the quizzically looking visitors, walk a magnificent stairs to the third floor into the sculpture garden. The view their is worth every single penny for the free entrance.

Excellent and friendly staff. The main exhibit upstairs was not what I think of when I think of contemporary but that in itself does cause me to have a broader perspective of what contemporary can mean. The exhibit downstairs was very futuristic looking and there were books on the wall which really made my day. Glad the elevator worked because there is no way I could have walked up all the stairs they have. They also seem to host cool and interesting events. I wish I lived locally or were there during one of the events so I could have attended. I thoroughly enjoyed my experience.
visited Madison Museum of Contemporary Art on a cold Saturday afternoon mostly because I needed somewhere warm to kill time downtown, and honestly I didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I’ve been to art museums before where I spent half the visit pretending to understand things that made no sense to me, but this place felt surprisingly approachable. The building itself caught my attention before I even walked inside. The glass staircase facing State Street looks really modern, and once you get up to the galleries, the whole space feels open and quiet without being intimidating. One thing I liked was that the museum didn’t feel overly crowded or touristy. People were casually walking through exhibits, sitting on benches talking about paintings, or just staring at artwork without rushing. I remember one exhibit in particular that used huge abstract pieces with bright colors and strange lighting. Normally I would walk past something like that in thirty seconds, but I ended up standing there for a while because it actually pulled me in emotionally even though I couldn’t fully explain why. That’s probably what stood out most about the museum — it felt less about “understanding art correctly” and more about experiencing it however you wanted. I also wandered up to the rooftop sculpture garden for a bit. Even though it was cold outside, the view overlooking downtown Madison and State Street was honestly worth it. A lot of visitors online mention the rooftop area and the free admission being major highlights too. The only downside was that some exhibits felt smaller than I expected, so you can get through parts of the museum fairly quickly. Still, compared to larger museums that feel exhausting after an hour, Madison Museum of Contemporary Art felt relaxed, creative, and easy to enjoy even if you’re not deeply into contemporary art.
Beautiful with engaging exhibits and glass stairs. It's free and the people are very friendly. There is paid parking nearby and the area is pretty walkable, the sidewalk is clear and salted. The bathrooms were clean and the areas seem wheelchair accessible with ramps and a elevator.
The staff were very friendly and welcoming, which made the visit enjoyable from the start. The exhibits were interesting and offered a different take on what contemporary art can be, which made for a thought-provoking experience. One of the lower-level exhibits had a more futuristic feel, which stood out in a good way and made the visit more memorable. I also appreciated the unique presentation elements throughout the space. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience, and I’d be interested in returning, especially for one of their events.
Nice collection. Great view. The rooftop is open to puruse art books, sketch, relax. Love the video art. Thanks to the donors for making admission free.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A Hidden Gem in the Heart of Madison – MMoCA I had the chance to visit the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art (MMoCA), and it completely exceeded my expectations. The museum itself is a stunning piece of architecture—modern, sleek, and filled with light. It creates the perfect setting for the powerful and thought-provoking exhibitions inside. Each gallery offered something different, from bold installations to emotionally resonant photography and multimedia art. I was especially impressed by the museum’s commitment to showcasing diverse and emerging voices, as well as pieces that spark real reflection on social, cultural, and personal issues. The rooftop sculpture garden is a must-see—it’s peaceful, inspiring, and gives you a beautiful view of downtown Madison. Admission is free, which makes this cultural experience accessible to everyone, and the staff was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. Whether you’re an art lover or just curious, MMoCA is a place that invites you to slow down, reflect, and connect with contemporary creativity in meaningful ways. I’ll definitely be returning for future exhibitions!
It's FREE. It is also close to the Capitol building and has very innovative pieces.
