I drove roughly 100 miles round trip from Riverside to see a 2021 Hyundai Kona Electric VIN KM8K23AG1MU130721 that was advertised online for $9,170. Before going, I confirmed the vehicle was available and was sent the Carfax by the dealer. The Carfax they provided showed a retail value around $8,940.
Once I arrived, the vehicle was there, but the deal changed significantly. The car had an addendum sticker showing nearly $7,000 in add-ons, including LoJack, Cilajet, and XPEL, and I was presented with a price around $17,000 instead of anything close to the advertised price. I was clear that I was willing to buy at or near the advertised price plus normal tax/title/DMV fees, but not at almost double the advertised amount.
Before I came in, I was also told over the phone that the vehicle still had manufacturer warranty. That was important because the vehicle had over 100,000 miles. When I asked about it in person, the sales rep had to look it up online and found the same issue I was concerned about: the manufacturer EV warranty appeared to be expired by mileage.
The test drive was also concerning. The sales rep only had me drive a few blocks around the business. When I asked how to get to the freeway, he said we could not drive it there because someone had gotten into an accident in the past. I explained that my commute is about 90% freeway and that I needed to test the vehicle at freeway speeds. He said he would have to check with his manager, but that never happened, even after I brought it up multiple times back in the office. That made me uncomfortable because I was never able to properly verify how the car drove at freeway speeds.
When I questioned how advertising the vehicle at $9,170 but presenting it around $17,000 was not a bait-and-switch situation, I asked if I could take a copy or photo of the quote. They refused. They also told me I could not rely on the Carfax value they had sent me and that I should go by KBB instead.
At one point, when they said I was not interested, I pointed out that driving roughly 100 miles round trip should show I was serious about the vehicle. The manager dismissed that and waved it away.
The manager I was dealing with did not give me their name and instead wrote down their manager’s information, Natasha Marques.
In my experience, this was a waste of time and felt very misleading. I would strongly recommend getting the full out-the-door price in writing before driving to this dealership, confirming any warranty claims in writing, and specifically asking whether add-ons are mandatory. I would also insist on a proper test drive that matches how you actually plan to use the vehicle.
Amir was a wonderful young gentleman and incredibly helpful. He helped me find my dream car! When I initially walked in, Amir spotted me from across the room and could tell I was a bit nervous (because I was). He kindly walked up to me and asked if I needed any help. I said yes and that I was looking for a new vehicle. With a big smile he said, "Well then you came to the right place, LA City Cars, located in Inglewood." I replied, "Well, I guess you guys do sell cars, don't you." We spent the rest of the day together testing cars and chatting about the Indianapolis Colts. He told me his brother was a Falcons fan and he wanted to pick a completely different team to support, so he decided on the Colts. I thought that was strange, but it didn't bother me nonetheless. After we finally stumbled upon a gorgeous Dodge Challenger, supercharged, high-speed monster with the Scat Pack, I hesitated and decided that wasn't the vehicle for me. So I went with a 2016 Toyota Camry, which my wife was pleased with. I would recommend LA City Cars to anyone in search of a new vehicle. Just ask for Amir, and don't bring up the Colts.
LA City Cars really earned this one! I’d been hitting both new and used car dealerships all over LA looking for a BMW, and either the price wasn’t right or the vibe was off. Then I came here...completely different experience.
Jimmy, the sales manager, was cool as hell. Down to earth, no pressure, no fake car salesman energy. He worked with me, got me the deal I wanted, and made the whole thing simple. The financing was fair too. They even let me refinance with my own bank later, but still let me take the car home the same day. That was a big plus.
The warranty was a good price compared to what other dealers were charging, and their inventory is crazy...real luxury stuff, not the usual beat-up used lot. I came in for one car, but they had me considering a few others just because everything looked that good.
Natasha, the General Manager, is a Black woman running the show, and she’s doing a great job. The energy in the showroom was right …good music, good people, everyone busy but still taking care of customers while having fun . They even offered me a slice of pizza while I waited to sign papers. You can tell they sell a lot of cars because that bell wrung at least 10 times while I was there. What a great atmosphere!
If you want an experience like myne run to LA City Cars and don’t go anywhere else! They’ll find a way to say yes when everyone else says no.
