The Menil Collection

Fantastic as always. You can spend an entire day in this museum. It is much smaller than the MFAH, but the Menil has a niche collection of objects, artworks, and installations that rotate around. Check out their surrealist section! 🖼️ My only thing is that I wished they would do something about the green areas with the glass; maybe a mini art exhibition there would brighten up that space. 👍 Overall, this museum is amazing. There is also the drawing institute nearby. The Rothko Chapel is also a must-visit! 😀

The Ultimate Sweet Spot Find: We spent a wonderful Wednesday midday (11:00 AM – 1:00 PM) exploring three of the Menil's four buildings. The campus architecture utilizes a creative lighting technique that funnels in soft natural light, setting a perfect mood for the galleries. It is an absolute cultural jewel that I will happily return to again and again. The Sweet Spots * **Discovering Cy Twombly:** I had never heard of Twombly before today, but I am now a true fan. His unique, multi-medium approach—spanning graphite, crayon, house paint, and sculpture—is fascinating. I loved his large-scale pieces and was deeply captivated by his minimal, white 1950s paintings created in Lexington, VA. (Catch his drawings at the **Menil Drawing Institute** before August 6, 2026!) * **The Main Building’s Permanent Treasures:** The galleries creatively display ancient artifacts from Africa, Greece, Turkey, and Italy alongside modern masterpieces by Andy Warhol, René Magritte, and another favorite of mine, Joan Miró. * **The Photography Exhibit:** Curated by Wendy Watriss (through August 16, 2026), this was my favorite part of the visit. It features moving historical photos of Martin Luther King Jr. and Civil Rights protests, alongside brilliant snapshot vignettes by Henri Cartier-Bresson that perfectly capture brief, fleeting moments in everyday life. The Bittersweet Element * **Running Out of Time:** Two hours wasn't quite enough. I didn't have time to stay and watch the 51-minute video installation, *The Hour of the Dog* by John Akomfrah, which covers the 1963 March on Washington. Missing it just gives me the perfect excuse to come back. The Takeaway The Menil Collection is the ultimate sweet spot for an enriching, beautifully paced late morning or afternoon. It left me thoroughly inspired, and I can't wait to go back to explore the rest. Admission is FREE! No photos allowed so I took photos of the brochures from the Menil Collection.

Honestly, one of the best galleries I have visited. First, it is free to enter but a donation is recommended, which I recommend to keep this gallery going. Second, the collection is made up of contemporary pieces, including two Andy Warhol pieces, and global artifacts. Third, no photos are allowed in the gallery. Fourth, really cool american exhibits including photo exhibit of america in the 1960s. Recommend you spend 2-3 hours to see the three gallery buildings.

A relatively small yet fine collection of for example Margret's paintings, Picasso and Max Ernst and Andy Warhol. Yet, the true sensation is the park all around the museum building, the similar restored more than a dozen older one and two storey building create a park like atmosphere students and Houstonians love to hang out.

Mean older staff that was run after you and police way too hard. Can barely enjoy the museum through the mean stares and being followed. Free entree. 4 different areas. Light installation was not worth the walk.

Great museum- free, great to visit with excellent surrealist and contemporary art collections - think Warhol. Love going and the architecture really accentuates the physical and art space. Highly recommend!

The Menil museum displays one of the United States' best private art collections, composrd of both the works in the building and the Rothko chapel and Barnett Newman column, which are across the grassy park. Across the street are the Cy Twombly gallery and further down is the Dan Flavin gallery. I especially love the Menil's collection of Renee Magritte paintings. Admission is free as is parking on nearby streets.

A must visit if you’re in the area! The whole museum is free and they have four galleries full of art. You can’t take any pictures in the galleries itself but the architecture of the buildings and the hallways were ok to take. Definitely worth a visit.
