A hidden gem, Marfreless is a River Oaks staple that's been around since the 70s. Dark & quiet, it's the perfect place for a date night with your significant other. Full bar downstairs & sofas to relax on upstairs.

Drinks are good. Atmosphere/setting is nice. Get your drinks on the 1st floor and leave! A complete.....nevermind. I wish they would clean this part of their lounge up. Its been happening for a very long time.

Whether you like this place or not will heavily depend on what you are going there for. If you are looking for your typical cocktail bar experience in the Montrose/Hyde Park area, you will be disappointed. Drinks are okay, but overpriced. However, if you know, you know why this place is loved by so many. Single guys are a problem, but the owner and bartenders have been doing a great job fixing this problem. The only suggestion that would really be a huge improvement is an upgrade to the upstairs. A small investment in privacy, curtains, etc. would go a long way at solving some of the bars current issues.

Update June 2026: Alert, be aware, what happens upstairs is illegal and police is running operative to stop it. Many paid services running upstairs. Friend facing charges after playing there.

Went here for drinks - probably my fault in the first place. The worst Manhattan I had in my life (not exaggerating…) sooo bitter, and also the Toki Highball was for some reason very bitter (?!). This place definitely has some sexual vibe…which I will not rate negative - that’s the theme and purpose of this place, apparently. But the furniture didn’t feel clean. Wouldn’t call it a cocktail bar with a private area, but a hidden lounge with some drinks. Don’t see a reason to come back unfortunately

I'm glad to have discovered the wonders behind the nondescript blue door. Lightning here was on the dimmer side. And coupled with the comfy seating on the first floor and loveseats on the second floor, the ambiance was perfect for an intimate hangout. I noticed groups of friends casually talking as well. We started out at the bar where we were greeted by a friendly bartender. There was an extensive variety of drinks on the menu. I had the Paloma prima cocktail while my date got a mango margarita. Both drinks were strong and well made. After some good conversation at the bar, we got another round of drinks which we took upstairs to chill on a loveseat. If grown and sexy is what you have in mind, you will be pleasantly amazed at this venue.
