We visited Batsto Village in Wharton State Forest on a Saturday and had an excellent time. It truly felt like stepping back in time, seeing how people once lived. We spent just over two hours exploring the grounds and the many historic buildings. There’s also a small museum with interesting displays. The village is set in a scenic area surrounded by woods and a small lake—perfect for photography. The walking is easy, with mostly flat terrain on a mix of paved, grassy, and gravel paths. It wasn’t crowded during our visit, with just a few couples and families strolling around. We found the experience both fun and educational, with beautiful scenery everywhere. There are also many hiking trails nearby if you want to extend your visit. Admission was $5 per car, and mansion tours require an additional ticket, which can be purchased at the visitor center. The visitor center also has restrooms and a small gift shop. Highly recommend a visit!

My son and I did the Lantern Walk for the Halloween season...it was really cool being there at night with only the lantern light to see with. It really felt like it took you back in time. The guides were historically accurate and very informative. We had a great time and would totally do it again.

I love going to the Country Living Fair. You usually get great weather and the fall foliage is gorgeous. It's nice how big of an area this place is so when it's crowded you don't feel overwhelmed. So many great vendors for accessories, crafts, holiday decorations, antiques, soaps, teas, jewelry, skincare, honey, food items, I could go on. Across the bridge they have quite a few food trucks that are really good. We tried a couple new places for BBQ chicken that fell of the bone and Wild Mushroom soup from The Soup Bar. It was so delicious we grabbed a quart to-go. This year I saw they had kayaks to take out on the lake. Then you have a few displays of wood carvings, classic cars, the blacksmith, and pony rides. It's cool to see all the old buildings. There's really a lot to enjoy here. Some people bring their dogs. The only downside is you can get stuck waiting in line to enter to park depending on what time you get there, but it's not terrible. You're not supposed to park along the fence or anywhere else except inside where they guide you. I made the mistake of getting out of line because I thought I saw a spot and an officer said nope. Definitely worth checking out and most vendors take card.

Visiting Batsto Village feels like stepping back in time. Walking through the grounds makes you wonder how life was lived centuries ago—how so much has changed, yet so much feels the same. Time truly seems to stand still here. It’s like a giant open-air museum, free to explore at your own pace. The general store was especially fascinating, with items that have been there for nearly 200+ years. A peaceful, reflective, and memorable place to visit. I would highly recommend watching the 10 minute documentary in the visitor center.

One of the most enjoyable places to visit in Pine Barrens combining historic village and mansion with majestic hiking trails converging on Batsto Village. Mansion tour was superb, the guide has conveyed the period information, history of the families and role of Joseph Wharton in acquisition of the bulk of land that comprises the state forest now. Modest fee makes the tour an affordable option. Ample picnic area and parking lot.

Beautiful hikes, interesting history, and a quaint little gift shop. This was a wonderful day trip for my family. Hiking on sandy trails through 4+ miles of the Jersey Pine Barrens was amazing! Definitely worth the trip if you love peace and quiet and hiking
