The mesuem itself was very interesting and had a nice layout, starting with the older fossils in the second floor and gradually making its way to the first floor with more modern displays. This isn't a huge musuem and if you just quickly look at everything, you can get through it in under an hour. But since everything was in some way related to the Valley, it was very interesting reading all about the displays and artifacts and how they tied into the local culture, and that gave us a good 2 and a half hours of enjoyment. Another fun aspect that helped pad out the time was the little scavenger hunt you can play. You get a paper and pencil from the front desk and use it to etch some drawing that are scattered throughout the museum. It's really meant for kids, but my group of three adults had a good time looking for each one and felt proud when we found them all. All the staff were friendly and informative and the whole facility felt very well kept up. This is a great piece of history for families or students (P.S. there is a discount for students) and I know it's a spot I would love to visit again.

tame yet beautiful museum! entrance fee is about $9, though they offer discounts to those who are in the military, students, young children, etc. you start the museum route upstairs, trail downstairs, out into the garden section, and into the jailhouse (with a bonus to the gift shop once you’re done!). this is definitely a family day or date day option if you find yourself confined into the “there’s nothing to do here” staff is friendly, and you truly do learn more about the valley’s history, i liked it!

A must see!! This place was absolutely amazing. So much rich history about South Texas. I would recommend taking at least 3 hours to get a chance to see everything slowly. Pictures are allowed. They have a cute little gift shop on the 1st floor. Loved it!

This museum was excellently put together and there were lots of interesting exhibits, starting with the prehistoric and moving all the way up to modern times. I particularly enjoyed the exhibits that dealt with the Mexican American War and the Territorial Jail exhibits. The staff was helpful when you needed it. I have been to museums all over the world and this was a good one.

Without a doubt, a beauty in South Texas. I've been here several times, and I'm still amazed at the vastness of this place. It's spacious, and always cool, so bring a sweater! I've brought my family here, and they loved it. I will be coming back. The new jail addition was great too! Love it! 5 stars mang!

I was pleasantly surprised by this museum. The staff in this place have a deep knowledge of the history of the Rio Grande Valley. This is a great place for solo to family history buffs and they even have a great puppet show that also provides a nice story of a family that resided in the area. What blew me away was the deep history of the indigenous people who resided in the area for generations and explored the people who tried to conquer or assimilate with them. Plus it also honors a Marine in one section of the museum that I encourage people to learn about. While I could only be there for 2 hours, if you take the time to read through the displays, you will likely spend approximately 4 hours there as rushed to take pictures at the end to read later.

It is a small museum but pack with excellent displays. We learned a lot about the local area. A good mix of videos makes it easier. Be sure to visit the adjacent jail building. Definitely worth some of your time. Plant in about 1-2 hours.
