The tour was wonderful. We had Dom as our tour guide. She was super lively and informative. I felt as though the tour was very respectful and focused solely on the slaves histories and stories. It did not glorify the atrocities and was very honest about the things that took place while still being suitable for all ages. I would recommend this tour to anyone.

We loved the tour here! Really nice that there’s an option to have a guided tour or to do an audio self guided tour. We did the guided tour and had Emi as our tour guide. She was the sweetest! Very knowledgeable and passionate, she answered any questions and kept everyone engaged. The 1.5 hour tour focuses on the perspective of the enslaved people. We got there about 45 before the tour started so we were able to look around the gift shop and check out the exhibit inside. We also had time to walk around the grounds a little bit on our own before the tour and take photos without a crowd of people around. Overall, highly recommend visiting here!!
We opted for the guided tour. Our guide, Dominique, was very knowledgeable and informative. She made sure our group was engaged throughout the tour. It's one thing to read about slavery, but seeing a plantation in person really puts it in perspective. The Whitney does a great job at telling a more complete history. Everyone should visit at least once.
It was pouring rain the day we visited. We didn’t care. The Whitney Plantation is the only plantation museum in Louisiana with an exclusive focus on slavery — not the architecture, not the antebellum lifestyle, not the family who owned the land. The people who were forced to build it, work it, and survive it. That distinction matters more than it might sound, and you feel it from the moment the tour begins. Our guide Ibrahim was exceptional. He didn’t just relay information — he delivered it with intention, pausing where the weight of something deserved silence and naming the things that history has a long habit of glossing over. Our group was thoughtful and engaged, asking real questions, sitting with hard answers. It made the experience feel less like a tour and more like a shared reckoning. What Whitney does that most historical sites don’t is insist that the enslaved are not a footnote. The Wall of Honor memorializes every known person enslaved at Whitney by name, with some biographical detail — origin, age, skills — each entry painstakingly recovered from original archives. The Field of Angels commemorates 2,200 enslaved infants who died before their second birthday, most from malnutrition and disease. Forty life-sized terracotta statues of enslaved children by sculptor Woodrow Nash are scattered across the grounds — in the church pews, on cabin porches, standing in the rain just as we were. They don’t let you look away. The staff at check-in were genuinely helpful and warm, setting the tone before the tour even started. The gift shop was one of the best I’ve encountered at any museum — stocked with Black and African merchandise, meaningful keepsakes, and a book selection serious enough to browse for a while. We left with reading material and a lot to think about. This is not light visiting. It is educational in the deepest sense — the kind that sits with you on the drive home and doesn’t leave quickly. Go with an open mind, go ready to learn, and go understanding that some history doesn’t get easier just because time has passed. It shouldn’t. Thank you to the entire team that was working to support smooth learning. For teaching from an almost lost perspective.
Holy moly this was a wonderful experience, we took out sons 16 and 20 on this trip with us and they both felt like the Whitney Plantation was one of the best parts of our trip to New Orleans. It was historically accurate and from the perspective of the enslaved person, which was exactly what we were hoping for. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE TOUR WITH A GUIDE. Our guide Aimee was incredible, she was so knowledgeable and friendly. We got to ask questions and interact ao much more than we would have if we had chosen a self guided tour. That being said of all the tours are full and you have to do self guided, do it! It’s still great. And you can check about upgrading when you get there if someone didn’t show for their tour, that’s what we did. Also the gift shop is great. We don’t normally shop in gift shops but the options were stellar. Definitely do this tour over the others it is excellent.
The storytelling was engaging, and our guide, who was from France, spoke with a thick accent. However, I had expected a local guide who would provide more stories about the people from the plantation. Some of the content felt generalized, and even the signs discussed slavery in other states rather than focusing specifically on Louisiana. According to our guide, the wall of names includes approximately 300 individuals, though it should include about 500. Overall, I had hoped for greater historical accuracy and left somewhat disappointed.
