A visit to the Cheyenne Depot Museum is a must if you're spending time in Cheyenne. The historic depot building itself is absolutely beautiful and worth seeing even before you step inside. The architecture and craftsmanship are impressive, and it's easy to imagine the important role this station played during the railroad era. Inside, the museum does a great job sharing the history of the Union Pacific Railroad and the development of Cheyenne. I especially enjoyed the train layout and the collection of railroad artifacts and exhibits. There is plenty to see whether you're a train enthusiast or simply interested in Wyoming history. The museum is well organized, informative, and located right in downtown Cheyenne. I found myself spending more time there than I expected because there was so much history to explore. If you enjoy trains, architecture, or learning about the American West, this is a fantastic stop. The combination of the beautiful historic depot, detailed exhibits, and working train layout makes this one of my favorite attractions in Cheyenne.

Visitor notes
We absolutely loved our visit to Cheyenne Depot Museum, it was one of the most memorable stops on our trip. From the moment we walked into the beautifully restored historic Union Pacific Depot building, we were impressed by the sense of history and character that fills every corner. The architecture itself, a National Historic Landmark, is stunning and gives you a real feel for the golden age of rail travel in the American West. The staff were friendly and welcoming, making the experience feel personal and enjoyable. We easily spent over an hour immersing ourselves in the history and taking in the details. Between the educational exhibits, historic ambiance, and charming appeal of the old depot, it’s a fantastic place to visit, whether you’re passing through or planning a special outing. Highly recommend this museum to anyone headed to Cheyenne, great for families, history lovers, or anyone looking for a unique and enriching experience!
A very informational museum with many train facts. On the top floor, there is an incredible diorama that follows a train that goes around a lot of tracks. It took one man 32 years to make, and it looks that detailed! Really captures Cheyenne’s spirit as a small town!
Very well done. A lot of railroad artifacts. One of the better Union Pacific museums.
Definitely stop by even if you aren't into trains. Very insightful. Down side is there weren't any trains to look at or tour. So kinda of a let down. The other big boy was at a park a few miles away and fenced off and homeless people hanging around so had to make it quick to see the train.
I really had a great time at this museum and learned so much! The signs are very text heavy, and probably would not be of interest to younger visitors, but they do provide a great deal of background and context for the artifacts in the museum. A trip to this museum really showcases the train history of Cheyenne and how important the union pacific railway and depot were to the growth of the city. I think kids would like this museum quite a bit. There is a train for them to play with downstairs and an extraordinary model train upstairs. The observation deck on the second floor gives you a fabulous view of trains as they enter and depart the train yard. The $10 adult admission price was more than fair. We spent about an hour this museum. There’s plenty of parking and there are clean accessible restrooms on the floors.
Beautiful place to go if you're a rail enthusiast/Railfan. Loved the patio where I can watch crews change trains on the back. If you're looking for a great place to railfan, I recommend the Union pacific museum here.
Wonderful time. Even saw silhouette of Big Boy sleeping in her shed.
