Visiting the Carmel Mission Basilica was truly one of the highlights of our trip. Whenever I travel and discover there’s a historic mission nearby, I make it a point to visit, as I’ve always been drawn to the beauty, history, and architecture of these sacred places—and Carmel did not disappoint. From the moment we arrived, there was an incredible sense of peace. The grounds are beautifully maintained, with stunning gardens, historic buildings, and breathtaking architecture that instantly transports you to another time. Walking through the basilica itself was especially moving. The craftsmanship, the details, the reverence of the space—it all felt deeply special. Knowing this mission dates back to 1771 adds even more appreciation for its preservation and significance in California’s history. It’s amazing to think about the generations who have walked these same paths. Whether you appreciate history, architecture, faith, or simply beautiful places, this is absolutely worth visiting. It’s more than just a sightseeing stop—it’s an experience that invites reflection, gratitude, and awe. Without question, one of the most beautiful missions I’ve visited, and a place I would happily return to again. Highly recommend making time for this gem if you’re in the Carmel area.

Opinioni dei visitatori
Carmel Mission Basilica might be smaller than some of California’s other missions, but it’s one of the most beautiful! Sitting in the gardens with their calm fountains in the beautiful May weather made for a couple of lovely, peaceful moments during our visit. The museum is incredible, full of amazing artifacts despite its humble size. And the store has many great religious articles, including a “Tree of Life” cross that I’m taking home with me. The store staff were so kind, too. I’m definitely coming back!
Carmel Mission Basilica is a stunning and peaceful historic landmark that truly captures the beauty of Monterey’s past. The architecture is breathtaking, with every corner filled with detail and meaning. The museum and grounds are well‑kept, offering a quiet space to learn and reflect. The gardens add a serene touch that makes the visit even more memorable. If you’re in the Monterey area, this mission is absolutely worth a stop for its history, beauty, and calming atmosphere.
Little pricy to enter, but it is a lovely mission. The facade of the church is like no other mission and it is the resting place of St. Juniperro Serra, founder of the California Mission System. The grounds itself is nice, however you can tell it has been paved over substantially. Stamps available in the gift shop.
A five star experience. As a homeschooling mom this basilica gave us an opportunity to learn about the history of Carmel and the first Spanish settlers that came to the area. We learned about how they lived and the areas that they traveled and eventually settled and established more Catholic missions. We saw many relics of saints and artifacts dating back to the 1500's. The Basilica tour was comprised of the church, the living areas, and history of the Munras family, originally of Spain and their contributions to the mission. We highly encourage spending at least an hour here if you enjoy reading the displays.
This was an unexpected visit. Stopped in for lent and went for the tour. Great history, architecture and well kept grounds. Staff was delightful! The gift shop was well maintained, staff was helpful and there were a lot items worth purchasing..
What a beautiful place to visit. Rich in history, beautiful landscaping, and a great place to come and just slow down. We even got to see a wedding while we were visiting.
A ton of history to learn from the basilica and the museum. The courtyard is well maintained. Definitely worth a visit.
