Nice smaller museum. Came on a free Thursday so size didn’t matter to me but just noting if you pay on a different day. When I came they had a couple rooms of their main collection plus two small temporary exhibits and one large one. If took me around 30 minutes to see all the pieces. I didn’t spend tons of time studying each piece, just moved casually through the space. It was of course great for free but probably not a collection I’d pay to see unless I liked one of the temporary collections. The main collection when I attended did have a Haring, an early Rothko, and a Nick Cave Soundsuit.

My fiancé and I took our two kids here yesterday, since our local library offered passes for free. Parking was a pain, but that’s to be expected. We went inside and were greeted warmly by a woman. She let us know a bit about the layout and we proceeded up the steps to the exhibit. The first half was somewhat interesting. Some of the art was beautiful or trippy and some wasn’t very eye-catching. It’s a very small museum and they also had part under renovation, so it seemed even smaller. When we got to the second half, that’s when we started having issues… About halfway through, they have an entire room dedicated to photographs of modern LGBTQ+ couples and individuals, some half naked. Personally, I don’t see this as art, but to each their own. From there, it got even worse. Rooms of paintings of Native Americans turned heavily LGBTQ+. It’s downright degrading to the indigenous. The fact that I walked in with small children and was not warned about the nature of some of these exhibits disgusts me. My children were visibly uncomfortable, as were we, so we had to leave quickly. I will be notifying our library about this as well. My biggest concern isn’t as much the art as it is the museum being advertised as family friendly with no warning about some of their exhibits. Had I known what my children were going to be exposed to, we wouldn’t have gone. If you’re conservative leaning, this is absolutely not the destination for you. If you have children, this is not for them. If I could give 0 stars, I would. Attached are just a few of the paintings/photos that were an issue.

The the building is beautiful. There are some interesting pieces of art to see, & most of the art is appropriate for children. They let us know that there is some inappropriate art and they do have it sectioned off.

What a wonderful first experience!! My 8 year old loves art and not only did he get to go for free, they also gave him a goodie bag with a t-shirt inside. Now we are planning to make it a monthly thing..

Didn’t expect a World Class Facility… Mostly on the recent side of modern, so excellent exhibits.

The Akron Art Museum was the perfect wedding venue. My wife and I chose them as our venue in July ‘23, and were married in September of ‘24. Once we chose them as our venue, they gave lists of preferred caterers and recommended vendors in the area, which made our planning process a lot easier. There were some staffing changes because we had a long engagement, but Ellie, Cydney, and Becca were all wonderful to work with as events managers and made the transition in positions extremely smooth for us. Guests LOVED the museum, as the ceremony was in the garden, and then they were able to hang out on the terrace and explore the exhibits during cocktail hour. The lobby was a gorgeous venue for dinner and dancing, and our entrance on the grand staircase was unforgettable. We truly could not have chosen a better venue. Thank you so much to all the events staff at the Art Museum for making our wedding day so wonderful!! (photos by Jessica Lee Photography)
