A very enjoyable buffet experience with a good variety of dishes, fresh food, and excellent value for money. The flavours are authentic and consistently better than many other buffet restaurants in Birmingham. In my opinion, this restaurant comfortably sits between Shahi Masala and Ziryab in terms of overall food quality. While Ziryab was once one of the best, it seems to have lost some of its original taste and now appears to focus more on weddings and large events. For me, the current ranking would be: 1. Shahi Masala 2. Royal Shalimar 3. Ziryab Overall, this buffet restaurant delivers a solid dining experience and is definitely worth visiting if you’re looking for quality South Asian food in Birmingham.

Visitor notes
Royal Shalimar is definitely one of the standout buffet spots in Birmingham, especially when it comes to size, décor, and overall setup. The place is huge — seating hundreds of guests with multiple sections including private rooms and open dining areas — and the interior is very classy and well done. The service was excellent — staff were attentive and kept things running smoothly even with how busy it gets. It’s also a big plus that they have prayer facilities available, which makes it very convenient. Food-wise, the starters and salads were very good, with plenty of variety. The buffet itself offers a huge selection of traditional dishes , which is impressive. The mains had a good range, but if I’m being honest, the flavour was a bit average compared to expectations. Desserts were a bit of a letdown — cakes were quite dry, and the kheer wasn’t as thick and rich as it should be. The other dishes was ok. Overall, for the price point and experience, it’s still a decent place — especially for groups and occasions.
Visited for the first time with my husband and children. Overall, the food was good, especially the salads. The lamb chops were a little overcooked, but that's not a big deal. The biggest downside was the seating area—it felt very congested and was difficult to move around. I was also disappointed with the desserts. There wasn't much variety like cheesecakes or trifles, and the chocolate cake was far too sweet and dried. Despite these points, we enjoyed our visit, and the quality of the main food—especially the salads—made it a pleasant experience. It would be even better with a more spacious seating layout and a better dessert selection.
Good customer service from the members of staff at the Front Desk and even in the main Buffet Hall. As it stands I’ve visited a variety of Buffet Restaurant across Birmingham. Royal Shalimar has such a grand entrance with comfortable seating area. When you enter the food hall, you notice normal table and chair seating across the hall. The Buffet setup to where all the foods should is set and organised, however the food was mid level. I did feel some of the stuff tasted nice like the Chicken Tikka, and Lamb Karahi. However there were some let downs with the starters. For £20.00 a head though you can’t complain!
One of the best buffet style restaurants. Reasonably priced with unlimited soft drinks top ups which unlike some other establishments of this type are not flat/tastles. Good selection of dishes, starters, salad, desert. Plenty of seating available. Decent size car park. Service is good as well. They constantly come over to take your empty dishes as well as clean/sweep around table.
Very good price compared to other buffets I’ve tried in London but Birmingham everything is much cheaper and Royal Shalimar include bottomless drinks in the entry price We had a table for 20 for a small wedding however they wouldn’t allow booking ahead for such a large group so bear that in mind for large events The tables are quite tightly seated and no space to move left and right but having such a large seating capacity in the venue I suppose it’s the trade off Very quick service and the waiters are all polite and they ask, they don’t assume, so your plates don’t get whisked away unexpectedly Range of food not as wide as some other buffet places but could be due to the area and audience that they are catering for, it’s mainly Asian style food and a peppering of American style fast food. Chops highly recommended as they make it fresh and stays juicy They have tight security inside and plenty of parking at the rear entrance and being Birmingham a lot of the space round the front is free to park as well
Visited the Royal Shalimar twice over the last 10 days for 2 weddings. Only good this about the wedding venue was the decorations and centre chandelier but otherwise the service and in house food was a let down. One of the weddings has the food from in house and just to warn you as I don’t like to put wedding food down/ the in house option a big no no. The lead female host was miserable and stuck up at both weddings . The car park staff even more rude with misleading information and baseless threats if you parked in wrong section even though the car park isn’t manned properly and no signs of which section is for buffer and which for the wedding venue. The serving staff were fairly helpful and they have a prayer room but the DJ on both days were unwise as they carried on playing music very loud whilst people prayed.
Great food and service, but the parking situation really lets the place down. While the parking area itself is spacious, it was extremely dirty and unpleasant to walk through. We had a baby in a pushchair, and it’s not ideal for families to have to navigate that kind of environment before even entering the venue. It gives a poor first impression and doesn’t reflect well on an otherwise good experience.
